Hunger, poverty, and extreme weather have forced Gangaram (Pankaj Tripathi), the village chief of a miserable village in Uttar Pradesh, to take extreme measures to improve the lives of his people. The village faces a tiger reserve.
Gangaram persuades the villagers to release them, offering himself to the hungry tiger and urging them to use his body as compensation to the government after all other means have been exhausted. Its success or failure crystallizes the next action.
As the credits roll, one is left to wonder if this story could have been the intense tale of man versus beast that has been tried and failed to be produced over the years.
The film deftly highlights how humans are encroaching on animal habitats, how humans are more greedy than animals, and how religion divides people, but nature is the same for all. But it is not until much later in the film, almost as the film nears its climax, that the film tackles these issues.
The Big Piece
A large portion of the story is used only to tie the plot together, stretching the whole thing out. Had the film been shorter, it would have been clearer if it tried to convey the issues through dialogue, satire, philosophy, and political references. The writing and editing could have done a better job if the beginning of the film was not so flippant. While the second half has too much momentum, it seems to be more sluggish than the first half. A better balance could have worked better.
However, the sound design and cinematography are commendable. The film’s music, however, deserves special mention. Surprisingly, there is not much hype in the film, but there are some unique and beautiful songs that fit the setting of the film and are sung in a very understated way.
Pankaj Tripathi
Pankaj Tripathi is the savior here. He is wonderful as Gangaram. Neeraj Kavi only comes in second as Hunter Jim and more work is expected from him. His interactions in the jungle bring out so many relevant themes such as human-animal conflict. Poverty, and greed that one wonders why the film was not start earlier.

The film seems to be right on target with Srijit Mukherjee’s intentions as director. At one point, however, it didn’t quite come together, which had a major impact on the final result.
