Millions of people experience dry eye each year. The good news is that if you have dry eyes, there are many things you can do to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.
Dry eye happens when your tears don’t work properly or when they don’t produce enough to keep your eyes moist. As a result, your eyes may feel irritated, and in certain cases, vision problems may develop.
Do I have a dry eye risk?
Anyone can get dry eyes, however certain things can make you more likely to do so, such as
- Age at least fifty-one
- Are women
- Wear contact lenses
- Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A, which are both present in foods like carrots, broccoli, and liver, are not consumed in sufficient amounts (found in fish, walnuts, and vegetable oils)
- Experience autoimmune conditions like lupus or Sjögren syndrome
What are the symptoms of dry eye?
- A painful sensation as though something is in your eye
- Stinging or burning sensations in your eyes
- Red eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Poor vision
What causes dry eye?
To keep the eyes wet, glands above the eyes regularly produce tears. Dry eye happens when your tears don’t perform their job. This could mean:
- Not enough tears are produced by your glands to keep your eyes moist.
- Your tears don’t last long enough.
- Your tears are simply insufficient to maintain the moisture in your eyes.
Treatment for dry eye?
The type of vision treatment you receive will usually depend on the reason for your symptoms. There are many treatment options available to make you feel better and keep your eyes healthy.
Changes in way of life. If something in your life or environment is the cause of your vision, your doctor could suggest changes to help protect your eyes.
Prescription medicines. If your vision disease is more serious, your eye doctor may advise you to take cyclosporine (Restasis) or lifitegrast (Xiidra). Both of these prescription eye drops will help your eyes make more tears.
