Birthdays are emotional events. It is the one day that offers the opportunity to create an impression of happiness. A child’s birthday is the perfect opportunity to preserve happy memories forever. It creates a special date that never fails.
Many people bake cakes to celebrate birthdays. It may be a family recipe passed down from generation to generation. Or it could be the birthday person’s favorite cake. Or it could be a themed cake. Cakes have a special place on children’s birthdays. And for its creator, the cake is an opportunity to create happy memories. Birthday parties can sometimes be. Affected by the weather. Balloons can deflate or pop. Streamers can hang down and games can go wrong. But the cake! Yes, the cake! The cake has to be exactly the right size!
The moment the birthday child first sees the cake is a memory that will last a lifetime. Make it a joyful moment. You will also have the special pleasure of being present at that moment. It’s a very special moment that succeeds every time.
I am not a good baker, but I do make birthday cakes for my family and friends and hope they like them. That’s why I recently made a themed cake for my two-year-old granddaughter who, at the age of two, has an impressive interest in big construction equipment. Every day when I pick her up from preschool, her grandfather takes her to the construction site. When the machine is “asleep”, finished with the day’s work and working for the night, it can only be stopped for a few minutes. If the construction monster is digging a large hole for a foundation or dumping a shovelful of dirt into a waiting truck, the downtime can last up to 15 minutes.
And that’s exactly what the tractor cake was supposed to be – the theme of my granddaughter’s birthday party. Specifically, it was this particular two-year-old’s favorite tractor, a backhoe. The sturdy buttercream pie crust was glazed with a generous amount of yellow food coloring to create a three-dimensional edible tractor. Licorice outlines, candy heart lights, cardboard reinforced with tape, a cake-covered shoveler arrow, a chocolate cake that looks like a “dirt pile”, chocolate and coconut candy “rocks” and mini chocolate cookies, little chocolate ‘Worksite’ cookies, a candle with the number ‘2’ and a mini picture of my granddaughter as the driver (in the window). Everything was ready to go. Would this be a cake my granddaughter would remember for a long time?
The time was right. My granddaughter saw the cake. A smile spread across her face. Her eyes widened. Then, “Tractor!” She spoke the words. Happy Birthday!” There was a moment of happiness! A moment of emotional happiness! A moment that will stay in your memory for the rest of your life! Also, a moment that makes me happy every time I remember it.
