We all know that makeup can cover up our flaws and make us seem more put-together when we’re feeling less than our best, but does it actually make people feel better about themselves?
I’m here to tell you that yes, makeup does increase your confidence — though the relationship isn’t as one-sided as you might think. It’s been proven that beauty products can have a chemical reaction with dopamine in your brain, which is responsible for regulating mood and emotions. In other words, when you wear make-up, it makes you feel more attractive, which in turn increases your confidence and sense of self-worth.
That’s right, the feeling that you’re pretty can actually change how you perceive yourself. When we wear makeup to feel more confident, we often forget that we’re wearing it. What’s even better is that a study conducted by the journal “International Journal of Cosmetic Science” revealed that wearing make-up led to an increase in self-esteem because of its physical manifestation.
The subjects were asked to write about a time when they felt confident or less confident, and for every time they wrote about feeling less confident than usual, their confidence level went down. On the other hand, when they wrote about times when they felt confident and that they had confidence in themselves, their confidence level remained high.
It all comes down to your mindset. Some people wear makeup because they feel unattractive without it, but most of us do it because we love the way our eyes look and because we’re more confident in ourselves when we feel pretty.
The good news is that we’ve all been wearing makeup for years and it hasn’t changed our confidence. It’s just part of our daily routine, but we’re doing exactly what we want to do (feel confident and pretty). So, even though you wear makeup to feel more confident, you should try not to think of it as a make-up trick. “The great thing about makeup is that it makes you feel beautiful,” says the editor of Allure Magazine, Amy Sciarretto. “It’s not that it makes you feel better about yourself — but rather the opposite.
