From glamorous suites designed for all sports stars to throwing an after-party for many, loaded with high-level entertainment, the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly or the ESPY award events in LA caters to a huge crowd.
The ESPY Awards are a unique and unforgettable celebration of the previous year in sports. It is one night full of reliving the past performances, the big let-downs, the record-breaking achievements of your favourite sports stars, and some heart-warming tributes like the Jimmy V Award or the Arthur Ashe Award.
The sports fanatics from all across the globe unite for such an impact and are also able to often vote online for their favourites, including categories like Team of the Year, Best Male and Female Athletes, Best Breakthrough Athlete, and so on. It is truly the best award in sports and rewards people not just for showcasing their individual and team-wise athletic prowess but also for humanitarian work and contributions to society at large.
In July 2022, we will again look forward to this exciting awards night once again when all the sports stars will come together and will be televised live on ESPN/ABC from the Microsoft Theater in LA.
ESPY 2021
While the host, presenters, and nominees are yet to be announced for the ESPY 2022, let us take a rewind to the ESPY 2021. Anthony Mackie, the star of ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hosted the ceremony.
Tom Brady was nominated for the Best NFL player, for the tenth time in a row and got his 4th nomination for the category of Best Athlete in Men’s Sports. Naomi Osaka and Amanda Nunes gave fierce competition to Breanna Stewart and Simone Biles before winning the Best Athlete in Women’s Sports.
Chris Nikic, the first patient to complete a full Ironman triathlon with Down Syndrome was bestowed with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. The Pat Tillman Award for Service was bestowed on the Manchester United star, Marcus Rashford for raising millions of dollars to help feed the children in the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The four-time champion of WNBA, Maya Moore received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for her extraordinary contribution to criminal justice reform. Apart from this, it was a star-studded evening with presenters from all spheres of sports, music, and even Hollywood, like Tracy Morgan, DaBaby, Robin Roberts, Taye Diggs, Kane Brown, and many more.
Did You Know?
- In 2015, a record was created when 7 million viewers watched the ceremony just to see Caitlyn Jenner get the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, which was also her first public appearance after transforming into a woman. This was the highest-rated telecast ever for ESPY.
- The golf star, Tiger Woods is an all-time record holder with 21 ESPY awards, which includes several Best Male Golfer and Best Male Athlete awards.
- Peyton Manning, the NFL football star is known for her record-breaking performance, with a total of three awards, consecutively in 2005, 2014, and 2015 along with Michael Phelps, the Olympic swimmer who received two awards in 2009 and 2013.
