Spouse Crown
In addition to the monarch, other members of the royal family also wear the crown. Since the 14th century, the queen’s spouses have been required to wear a headdress or turban at the coronation ceremony.
In 1685, the wife of James II, Mary of Modema, received the crown the day before the ceremony. Like other crowns, this spouse’s crown is also inlaid with rich jewelry, with 177 diamonds, but these diamonds were borrowed and had to be removed after the ceremony. Subsequently, diamonds were replaced by quartz. This crown was once used by many female members of the royal family.
Until 1937, the wife of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and the current Queen’s mother designed and made a new crown for her husband’s coronation ceremony. The crown consists of 2800 diamonds and has a platinum frame.
The famous KOH-I-Noor diamonds are mounted on the cross on the obverse of the crown. This diamond was once worn on the crown of Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra. In addition, another Sultan Abdul Medjid gave Queen Victoria a large diamond to thank Britain for its military assistance during the Crimean War.
