Introduction about Kevlar
Kevlar is a strong fabric that is heat resistant and very light in weight as well. It is also called the king of protective clothing. Kevlar is a tough fiber that is used in car tires, military, and tactical vests. Moreover, it is also used in heat-resistant firefighters’ uniforms.
Formation of Kevlar
A lot of you might have questions about what makes Kevlar so strong. So here is the answer to that, the molecular structure of Kevlar is positioned parallel to each other. This way the material automatically becomes bullet proof.
Invention
This absolute miracle of a fabric was invented by Polish-American scientist Stephanie Kwolek. This invention was founded when his team experimented with a bunch of plastics. They were surprised to see that the product they developed was stronger than nylon, which was a hot fabric in the market at that time in terms of being strong. During the late seventies, it was the beginning of Kevlar in the racing industry. Soon it made its entry into aircraft and boat construction before being used as protective clothing.
More advantages
A few other things that Kevlar possess is that it can be stretched and it is tear resistant. Another good thing about Kevlar that can leave you stunned is that it can stop a bullet. Yes! This is not a joke, but a fact. Kevlar vests are specially designed with multiple layers of Kevlar to stop a bullet. Though only one or a few sheets can do the work too. The fabric of Kevlar can absorb the bullet and stop it from passing through. While if we use more sheets of Kevlar there is a chance of the bullet being stopped and getting bend too.
Few key points about Kevlar
Kevlar is unaffected by moisture. However, it is affected by environmental factors more than other materials. Furthermore, it requires specially made scissors to sever dry fabric. Once laminated it can only be pierced with specially made drill bits. Kevlar is an expensive fabric too. It can cost an approximate of $29 per yard. The United States makes the most of Kevlar and exports it to other countries as well.
