A moment dethroned by the advent of the duvet in the choice of bed linen, the bedspread tends to return to the front of the stage and finds its letters of nobility. Designed to protect delicate bed linen, it is also an element of bedroom decoration in its own right. We will tell you about it right away in this article!
Bedspread: properties
Dimensions
To fulfil its role, the bedspread should ideally cover the entire surface of the bed. If it is too big or too small, the decorative effect will be missed, and it won’t be easy to use.
To make the right choice, it is of course the dimensions of the bed that must be taken into account:
For a single bed (90 centimetres wide), the best size bedspread is 140 x 200 cm.
In the case of a bed for two people, ie 140 X 200 cm in a standard size, a bedspread of 200 x 200 or 240 x 220 cm must be provided. If the bed dimensions are wider, i.e. 180 x 200 cm, it is better to choose a bedspread of 275 x 260 cm.
Uses
The bedspread also has many virtues:
First, it dresses up your bed and bedroom in the blink of an eye.
It also protects your bedding (duvet, blankets, sheets) and contributes to the room’s decoration.
It warms the atmosphere by bringing a cosy note to make the bedroom a really warm and comfortable cocoon . It can be matched with bed linen or other accessories such as curtains or lampshades, for example, or play the originality card by standing out with colours that contrast with the rest of the decor.
The materials of a bedspread
Cotton and organic cotton
Cotton is a natural and comfortable material that allows you to have a soft product that resists over time. The colours are long lasting and last wash after wash.
However, cotton dyeing can include chemical dyes which can be polluting and allergenic. It is better to opt for organic cotton, which is a little more expensive but more environmentally respectful.
Linen
Comfortable and very supple, linen has a great advantage: it breathes! This makes it a material particularly suitable for high temperatures for a light summer bedspread.
Satin
Satin is a high-quality fabric made from beautiful fibres of cotton or silk. It brings comfort and gives the room a luxurious and refined look.
Decorative models and tips for a bedspread
There are different models of bedspreads depending on the desired effect.
Boutis
The boutis is made from several layers of fabric: linen, cotton, wool or silk. Therefore, it is quilted, making it the most comfortable and cosy bedspread. In bright tones such as tangerine orange, fuchsia or pistachio green, it energizes the room’s decor and takes on a bohemian air.
It is perfect for an ethnic spirit, accompanied by a rug in natural fibres or imitation sheepskin.
Crocheted
More classic, the crocheted bedspread in wool or linen brings a traditional and romantic note to the decor of a bedroom, with its endlessly declinable patterns. Adorned with light tones illuminating the room: white, cream, vanilla yellow and green bedspread.
Patchwork
Also, a great classic is the patchwork bedspread. Made up of more or less wide squares of various colours and patterns, made by hand. Graphic by mixing geometric figures in black and white or ochre bedding is romantic with floral patterns in pastel tones. Matched with fabrics reminiscent of one of the primary shades.
Fake fur
The faux fur bedspread (polyester or acrylic) gives an effect of warmth and softness. It is glamorous in pearl grey, purple or steel blue tones and contributes to a very trendy boudoir style decor. Its velvet bedspread variant is available in old pink or almond green tones for a feminine note.
Bedspread: its maintenance
Depending on the size of your bedspread. Not fit in your washing machine especially. The best is to go to a dry cleaner or a laundromat, ensuring that the bedspread is machine washable.
Then select the “delicate laundry” cycle with cold water. For drying, plan to take out the bedspread at least once during the operation to shake it and thus prevent the filling from settling on one side more than the other.
