he Department of Legal Metrology is concern with the manufacturing, sales, distribution, and import of weighment and measurement units. Any measurement instrument needs to get its calibration check by the Legal Metrology department. This inspection will authenticate the required product quality in the market. Model Approval certificate
A Model approval issues to the manufacturers and importers of weights and measuring products by the legal metrology department. The model approval certification is define under the Legal Metrology Act of 2009. The importers and manufacturers of such products have to apply for and obtain the model approval certificate from the Legal Metrology Department.
Eligibility Criteria
According to the legal metrology model approval, the importer or the manufacturer of the weights and measurement product must meet the regulatory requirements of the Legal metrology department. The manufacturers of weight or measure are requested to ensure that the photograph or the schematic diagram of the sealing provision of the model adheres to the following guidelines.
Photograph of the Model:
- The photograph must be clear and legible.
- Meanwhile, The photograph must be of the model only without any object being weigh.
- Except for the declaration, no other information should be provided on the sealing of the product.
- If the weighbridge is the product, then the photo of the indicator must be sent separately without showing it on the weighbridge platform.
Schematic Diagram:
- Firstly, The schematic diagram must be clear and readable.
- Secondly, Schematic diagram must indicate whether sealing is done by passing the wire through the hole on the body of the model itself/ of the indicator or through nuts and bolts etc.
- Then, The diagram must indicate the manner, location, and nature of sealing and the particular side of the model or of the indicator on which sealing is done as the case may be [ rear or at the sides, etc.] and how sealing is done namely whether by lead and wire, etc.
- At the last, A written description of the sealing provision should also be provided for better clarity and incorporated into the final certificate.

Required Documentation
The applicant must submit the following documents along with the application form for model approval certification.
- CoI (Certificate of Incorporation) of the applicant company
- Business license(s) held by the applicant company.
- Two passport-size photographs of the applicant.
- Duly fille application form
- Schematic diagram of the product(s).
- Sealing provisions description
- The importer should provide a declaration stating that no changes were made to the product before its distribution.
- Principal Display Panel details.
- Receipt of the model approval certificate application processing fee
Model Approval certification process
The process of model approach certification is as follows:
- Furnish the requisite documents.
- File the approval application along with the documents.
- Submit the product sample along with the application to the Department of Legal Metrology.
- The Department will then assess the submitt application along with the sample product and send it for testing.
- The sample will be forward to the Directorate General.
- Note: If the applicant is an importer, there is no need to send the product for sample testing.
- If the product fits the regulatory requirements of the Legal Metrology Department, you’ll obtain the Legal Metrology Certificate.
