- The Pearl of La Paregrena
Found in the Gulf of Panama 554 years ago. Teardrop shape, weight 58.5 carat (234.0 beads), shape and size of dove egg, is a famous history of high quality large pearl. It was brought to the Spanish palace by colonists around 1554. It is said to have been kept by seven generations of queens in Spain. In 1799, Napoleon launched the Brumoonputsch, and the Pearl of La Paregrena became Napoleon’s possession. In 1814, when Napoleon was defeated, his brother Joseph gave some of the royal jewels, including this large bead, to his niece Hautans. In 1870, Houtense’s son was exiled to England. In exile, he was so poor that he had to sell some of his jewelry to make ends meet, including the Pearl of La Paregrena. Actor Richard Burton paid $3,700 for the pearl at an auction in 1969. Soon after, he gave the pearl to his wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor, as a gift for her 37th birthday.
